create.able. Participant Spotlight: Yousef Takes Us Inside Sydney Metro Expansion

At create.able., we believe creative skills are best developed by creating something real.

Our participants don’t just learn about film, media and content creation — they have opportunities to develop ideas, get behind the camera, present, film, edit and turn the things they are passionate about into creative projects.

One of those participants is Yousef.

Turning a passion for transport into video content

Yousef is passionate about transport, particularly the Sydney Metro.

For his latest create.able. project, Yousef took that interest and transformed it into an informative video exploring the Sydney Metro M1 North West & Bankstown Line.

In the video, Yousef takes viewers on a journey through the Metro network, sharing facts about the stations, infrastructure and services while explaining what makes the Metro so interesting to him.

From underground stations, lifts and escalators to the sections of the Metro that emerge above ground, Yousef brings his own knowledge, personality and enthusiasm to the story.

But behind the finished video is something even more important: the opportunity to take an idea and turn it into a piece of real creative content.

Learning creative skills through real projects

create.able. is a creative arts program for neurodivergent individuals aged 17–35 with low support needs who are interested in developing a pathway into the creative industries.

Participants train in a purpose-built creative studio and learn in much the same way working creative professionals do — through practical projects.

Depending on their interests, participants can gain experience in areas including:

  • Film and screen production

  • Directing and presenting

  • Camera and filming

  • Video editing

  • Animation and design

  • Drama and performance

  • Music and creative arts

  • Content creation

Participants are guided by industry staff experienced in supporting young people with learning disabilities, with an emphasis on developing practical skills, confidence and work readiness.

Creating from what you already love

Yousef’s project is a great example of what create.able. is.

Creative development doesn’t have to begin with someone else telling you what to make. It can begin with something you already know, care about or can’t stop talking about.

For Yousef, that is transport.

His knowledge of the Sydney Metro gave him a subject to research, explain and communicate through video. In the process, that personal interest became the foundation for developing creative and media skills.

That is what makes participant-led projects so valuable.

We want participants to feel that their interests and ideas are worth exploring — and then give them the environment, equipment, guidance and practical experience to bring those ideas to life.

A genuine step towards the creative industries

create.able. is about more than simply keeping participants engaged.

Create.able. Is a creative arts program for individuals 17-35 years with low support needs looking to gain a pathway into creative industries.

Our goal is to help young people build real, work-ready creative skills that can contribute towards future opportunities in film, screen, media, animation, music, design and the broader creative arts.

Along the way, participants can create work they are proud of, build experience and begin developing a portfolio that demonstrates what they can actually do.

For Yousef, this video started with a love of transport.

Then came the opportunity to create.
